What is the story about?
Sunetra Pawar, a Rajya Sabha MP, is all set to make history by becoming the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
She is the wife of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader
Ajit Pawar, who died in a tragic plane crash on Wednesday.
The 62-year-old is expected to take the oath on Saturday, with a meeting of 40 legislators scheduled at 2 pm today.
Who is Sunetra Pawar?
Born in October 1963 in the Dharashiv district, Sunetra Pawar grew up in a political background. Her father, Bajirao Patil, was a respected regional leader, while her brother, Padamsinh Bajirao Patil, was a well-known figure in district politics during the 1980s.
She completed her Bachelor of Commerce degree from SB College in Aurangabad, which laid the foundation for her later work in managing institutions and large-scale projects, including Baramati High-Tech Textile Park.
Role in Business Ventures
Sunetra was a key figure in the Baramati High-Tech Textile Park, where she made decisions about production planning, investments, job creation, and women's empowerment.
The park provides jobs to over 15,000 women, most of whom come from rural areas. For her efforts in women's empowerment, she was honoured at the ‘Icons of Pune’ Awards. The park was even visited by the then-President Pratibha Patil.
Global Leader
Since 2011, she has been a thinktank member of the World Entrepreneurship Forum (France). She represents India in international discussions on sustainability and social innovation.
Contribution to Education Sector
Sunetra Pawar is a trustee of Vidya Pratishthan, one of Maharashtra's prominent educational groups. In this role, she oversees academic quality, administrative systems, and institutional planning for more than 25,000 students.
Social Work
In 2010, Sunetra started the Environmental Forum of India (EFOI), a non-governmental organisation, which focused on promoting organic farming and environmental conservation. Under her leadership, EFOI introduced the concept of the eco-village model in India.
One of her most notable projects is transforming Katewadi village into India's first ‘eco village.’ The idea was to encourage villages to save water, use renewable energy, manage waste properly, and protect natural resources, along with supporting local livelihoods.
She is also the trustee and advisor of an old-age home, which is located on the outskirts of Baramati.
Environmentalist
Sunetra Pawar has led several grassroots campaigns on biodiversity conservation and the protection of endangered species.
She has worked extensively on water resource management, especially in drought-prone areas. For her contribution to environmental causes, she was honoured with the 'Green Warrior Award.'
