What is the story about?
IndiGo has launched direct flights between Chennai and Réunion Island that marks a new international connection aimed at boosting tourism, business travel and diaspora movement. The service commenced on April 29 and will operate three times a week.
The airline said the route will be serviced using Airbus A320 aircraft with flights scheduled on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Flight 6E 1871 will depart Chennai at 12:20 pm and arrive in Réunion Island at 5:10 pm, as per the press release.
The return flight 6E 1872 will leave the island at 6:10 pm and reach Chennai at 2:10 am the next day.
The new route is expected to improve connectivity between India and the Indian Ocean island which until now largely depended on one-stop travel options.
“An exciting addition to our expanding network, this destination offers a diverse range of experiences - from hiking and canyoning in UNESCO-listed national parks to paragliding over rugged coastlines, whale watching, and snorkelling in magnificent coral reef lagoons. With the introduction of this unique route,
IndiGo becomes the only Indian airline to offer direct connectivity between India and the island which is also home to a large Indian diaspora. Be it for tourism, trade, or visiting family and friends, this new direct service enhances choice and convenience for customers,” Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said.
Réunion Island, an overseas department of France in the Indian Ocean, has a significant population of Indian origin estimated at around 300,000 people. That makes them more than one-third of the island’s population. This has been a key factor that drove demand for direct connectivity with India.
The island itself is known for its varied geography that include volcanic mountains, rainforests, waterfalls and coastal areas. Large parts of it, including its pitons, cirques and ramparts, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Alongside tourism, authorities have also been developing infrastructure for business events and conferences.
IndiGo said passengers will be able to book tickets through its website, mobile app and travel partners. Additional services such as pre-booked meals, seat selection and flexible booking options will also be available. Travellers have been advised to check visa requirements before booking.
