What is the story about?
Weeks after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) captured national attention with its protest over the NEET paper leak issue, another online citizens' movement has surfaced. Calling itself the E20 Janta Party, the group is now drawing attention for its criticism of the government's ethanol-blended petrol policy and its calls for greater consumer choice and transparency.
Although still in its early stages, the movement has rapidly built an online following, with its posts on fuel policy, consumer rights and accountability generating widespread discussion online.
Who is behind the E20 Janta Party?
The E20 Janta Party (EJP) describes itself as an independent citizens' movement rather than a political outfit. Although the identity of its founder has not been disclosed, the campaign says it aims to raise awareness about India's E20 (20% ethanol-blended petrol) policy.
In a post on X, the outfit said its aim is to promote transparency, protect consumer rights and encourage public discussion on the government's ethanol-blending programme.
“We do not support or endorse any political party. Our support is for the people not for any political ideology. Please don’t get distracted by rumours about who is behind this movement or where it is being operated from. Such speculation only takes attention away from the real issue. Our demand is simple: accountability, transparency, and the right of consumers to be heard,” it wrote on X.
The campaign has witnessed rapid growth on social media. Its X account, originally created in May 2024 and recently renamed, gained more than 25,000 followers within hours of going viral. By Monday morning, the account had crossed 48,000 followers and has since grown to around 49,600 followers. Meanwhile, the group's official Instagram page has amassed over 211,000 followers.
What are the E20 Janta Party's demands?
Unlike calls to scrap ethanol-blended petrol altogether, theE20 Janta Party says its primary demand is consumer choice. It wants fuel stations to offer E0 (100% petrol), E20 and E85 simultaneously, allowing motorists to decide which fuel best suits their vehicles.
"Just make E0 petrol available at petrol stations and let people choose voluntarily between E0, E20 or E85. That would end the problem itself. If someone wants E0 petrol for his non-compliant car, let him have it! Forced feeding should stop ASAP," it wrote on X.
The group has also demanded the resignation of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari over the government's ethanol-blending policy.
Availability of E0 petrol at retail fuel stations across the country.
No price difference between E0 and ethanol-blended fuel.
Clear fuel labelling so consumers know exactly what they are buying.
Publication of government data on the costs, benefits and impact of ethanol blending.
Independent studies on mileage, engine performance, emissions and maintenance costs of different fuel blends.
Greater accountability, transparency and protection of consumer rights.
Calls for protest
The campaign has also expanded beyond social media. Another account using the E20 Janta Party name has announced a Parliament march on August 4, claiming that taxi operators, tourist transporters and commercial vehicle owners from across the country will protest against ethanol-blended petrol and the mandatory installation of GPS and panic button systems.
"Under the leadership of Sanjay Samrat, thousands of drivers and vehicle owners will gather to demand action from the government," it wrote.
