What is the story about?
Passengers may soon have to spend more on their favourite station snacks, as the Central Railway has announced a revised price structure for food stalls. From vada pav to samosas and dosas, many popular items served at railway platforms are set to become more expensive starting June 1.
The revised rates come at a time when rising fuel and cooking gas prices are already affecting household budgets across the country, triggered by the ongoing Iran conflict and the global crude oil situation.
The official circular was issued by the Office of the Chief Commercial Manager (Claims & Catering) at CSMT Mumbai. The updated prices will apply to static catering units operating across Central Railway divisions, including Bhusaval, Bhopal, Solapur, Nagpur and Pune.
One of the biggest price jumps has been seen in the cost of vada pav and samosas, two of the most commonly purchased snacks by train commuters. The price of vada pav has reportedly increased from ₹13 to ₹20, while samosas will also now cost ₹20 instead of ₹12, as per NDTV Profit.
Several other food items have also become costlier under the revised menu. Sandwiches, frankies, dosas, pav bhaji and even tomato soup have all seen price revisions. While prices of many snacks have gone up, some food items have been left unchanged. Products such as kachori, gulab jamun, fresh juices and misal pav will continue to be sold at their existing prices.
Meanwhile, a few items, including chana farsan, chikki and milk shakes have been removed from the regular railway catering menu and shifted to the PAD category, which includes branded and pre-packaged food products.
Railway authorities have instructed all catering license holders to clearly display the new prices and menus in both Hindi and English at their stalls. Officials have also said that the increased prices should lead to better food quality for passengers.
The divisions are directed to conduct inspections and sales reviews after six months to assess whether the revised pricing has improved food quality. Regular monitoring of food quantity and quality has also been ordered.
