What is the story about?
Google has announced funding support of $8 million to India’s AI Centres of Excellence for health, agriculture, education, and sustainable cities, and committed $4,00,000 to support the development of India’s health foundation model, as part of its broader efforts to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem.
Google — the developer of AI models including Gemini and Gemma that are integrated across search enhancements, cloud services, and enterprise tools — is also supporting Gnani.AI, CoRover.ai, and BharatGen with $50,000 grants each to build models focused on Indic language solutions.
The company said it is providing Wadhwani AI with $4.5 million in funding to support multilingual, AI-powered applications for health and agriculture, according to a release.
These announcements form part of a series of collaborations and funding commitments by Google and Google DeepMind aimed at supporting India’s AI research, deployment, and governance capabilities, the company said.
“Google announced funding of $4,00,000 to support new collaborations that will leverage ‘MedGemma’ to build India’s Health Foundation Models,” the company said.
Such models aim to improve efficiency among healthcare providers and enhance patient outcomes across India.
Google said Ajna Lens will work with experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to build models supporting India-specific use cases in dermatology and OPD triaging.
The resulting models will contribute to India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, with outcomes made accessible to the broader ecosystem, it added.
Additionally, researchers, AI experts, and clinicians from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will explore the use of AI models for wider clinical applications.
As part of the same initiative, Google DeepMind said it has funded IndiaAI Mission-backed deeptech startup CoRover.ai, the creator of BharatGPT, described as India’s first large language model. CoRover.ai is using Gemma’s foundational architecture to develop a pre-trained, e-governance-focused language model in English, Hindi, and multiple Indic languages, aimed at supporting applications across government departments as well as public and private sector use cases.
To further its inclusive AI agenda, Google also announced a $2 million founding contribution to establish the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay. The initiative aims to ensure that global AI advancements address India’s linguistic diversity and support responsible, inclusive, and scalable AI adoption, the company said.
Ankush Sabharwal, Founder & CEO, CoRover.ai | BharatGPT, said, “This partnership with Google DeepMind goes far beyond monetary support. Their deep research capabilities and profound expertise in Generative AI will significantly strengthen our models, with security remaining a paramount priority. This collaboration will enable us to build more robust sovereign and enterprise AI models.”
