Sept 29 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group is reportedly laying the groundwork for a succession plan that would see President and Chief Operating Officer John Waldron succeed David Solomon as CEO as early as 2027 or 2028.
If finalized, the transition would crown a nearly three-decade career at the Wall Street giant for the 57-year-old executive, who has worked in lockstep with Solomon to engineer the firm's modern strategic direction.Here are key facts about Waldron’s

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
Waldron was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, before his family relocated to Philadelphia when he was 15. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College in Vermont.
A former youth athlete, Waldron often credits his early sports experiences for teaching him discipline, the value of constructive feedback, and the importance of methodically improving upon his weaknesses.
CLIMBING THE WALL STREET LADDER
Like Solomon, Waldron spent part of his early career at Bear Stearns. He joined Goldman Sachs in 2000, roughly a year after Solomon's arrival.
In an interview recently, Waldron shared that Goldman Sachs had initially rejected him as he failed a financial modelling test due to weak mathametics and accounting skills.
Waldron steadily advanced through Goldman's investment banking divisions. He served as co-head of leveraged finance and held several positions of increasing seniority between 2000 to 2007, followed by a stint as global co-head of the financial sponsors group from 2007 to 2009.
He served as global head of investment banking services and client coverage from 2009 to 2014, when he was promoted to co-head of the investment banking division, a role he held until October 2018.
SOLOMON-WALDRON ERA
Waldron's career trajectory has closely mirrored Solomon's. In October 2018, the exact month Solomon was named CEO, Waldron was elevated to president and chief operating officer at Goldman Sachs.
In January 2025, both executives were awarded massive $80 million retention bonuses in restricted stock. The following month, Waldron was officially added to Goldman Sachs' board of directors, a move analysts viewed as cementing his status as the heir apparent.
The move came a few months after he was reportedly approached by alternative asset manager Apollo, which he declined.
Industry analysts have also noted that Waldron and Solomon have driven Goldman's current priorities together. Waldron is widely expected to maintain the strategy devised under Solomon rather than implement a radical pivot.
KEY INITIATIVES AND LEADERSHIP STYLE
As COO, Waldron has led execution priorities and operational efficiencies. Notably, he is credited with developing "OneGS 3.0", a long-term, AI-driven transformation plan introduced in late 2025. The initiative was designed to bolster the bank's resilience, productivity and profitability through automation, alongside capping headcount growth.
He serves as co-chair of the firmwide enterprise risk committee, giving him broad oversight of Goldman's financial and nonfinancial risk management.
Waldron is known for a disciplined, highly organized leadership style - famously color-coding his calendar to strictly separate business from family time - something he said in a conversation with BYU Marriott dean Brigitte Madrian. Waldron is married and has six kids.
EXTERNAL EFFORTS
Beyond Goldman, Waldron is chair of the International Advisory Board of the Atlantic Council and a member of the board of directors for the US-China Business Council.
He also sits on the boards of the Cleveland Clinic, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the board of trustees at Middlebury College.
