NEW YORK, July 1 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs on Wednesday named Michael Bosworth as acting general counsel and a member of its core executive leadership team, while Kathryn Ruemmler, who resigned after emails showed her links with late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, stays on as an adviser.
Ruemmler stepped down as chief legal officer and general counsel after documents published by the U.S. Justice Department showed she accepted gifts from Epstein and advised him on how to address media
inquiries regarding his crimes. Her resignation was effective June 30.
U.S. Democratic lawmakers Elizabeth Warren and Raja Krishnamoorthi have flagged concerns to Goldman CEO David Solomon over his reported plans to keep her as an adviser.
Ruemmler will testify before the U.S. House Oversight Committee investigating Epstein in mid-July.
In an internal memo, Solomon said Ruemmler had agreed to continue in an advisory role as senior counsel until such time as a new chief legal officer is appointed, according to a person who has seen the memo.
Ruemmler, who worked at Latham & Watkins LLP before joining Goldman, also previously served in the White House as counsel to President Barack Obama.
The acting general counsel Bosworth joined Goldman from Latham & Watkins, where he was a partner and co-chair of the New York Litigation and Trial Department.
Previously, he served as deputy counsel to President Obama and special counsel to the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Goldman Sachs has declined to comment on Ruemmler's advisory role.
Scrutiny has intensified on the ties between major financial institutions and Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His death at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City was ruled a suicide.
