What's Happening?
B&Q has announced the completion of its transition to low-carbon fuels across its logistics fleet. The company has switched all remaining vehicles and 80 refrigerated trailers to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), which can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel. Since 2019, B&Q has introduced 105 Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) vehicles, forming the second-largest LNG fleet in the UK, reducing emissions by approximately 16,000 tonnes. The changes are part of a joint decarbonization program with GXO Logistics, which manages B&Q's distribution network.
Why It's Important?
B&Q's transition to low-carbon fuels is a significant step towards achieving its 2040 net-zero goals. The initiative demonstrates the company's commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. By adopting HVO and LNG, B&Q is setting an example for the logistics industry, showcasing how innovation and collaboration can lead to more efficient and environmentally conscious operations. The transition also aligns with consumer demand for sustainable delivery options and supports B&Q's broader sustainability strategy.
What's Next?
B&Q plans to continue its fleet electrification efforts, with additional electric vehicles expected within the next five years. The company is also piloting a transport optimization system enabled by artificial intelligence, which could further reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency. As B&Q progresses towards its net-zero goals, it will likely explore additional strategies to enhance sustainability across its supply chain.
