What's Happening?
Equinor Renewables Americas is progressing with the Empire Wind 1 project, which involves the installation of wind turbine foundations off the coast of Long Island. The project will consist of 54 turbines located 15 to 40 miles southwest of Long Island, each capable of generating 15 megawatts of power. This energy will be transmitted to an offshore substation and then carried onshore via submarine cables to a substation in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The project aims to provide electricity to 500,000 homes by 2035. Currently, the construction phase involves placing foundations on a rock layer on the seabed to ensure stability and prevent erosion. The monopile foundations serve as the base for the turbines and the entry point for cables that will transport power to the offshore substation.
