What's Happening?
The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), in collaboration with the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO), has launched a new export strategy aimed at boosting the export of indigenous plants from the Eastern Cape. The strategy targets a 25% increase in exports over the next three years, providing local producers with access to new international markets and support for obtaining product certifications. The initiative focuses on plants such as aloe ferox, honeybush, and rosemary, with target markets including North America, Europe, and Asia.
Why It's Important?
This export strategy is crucial for the economic development of the Eastern Cape, as it aims to unlock international markets for local producers, thereby increasing their revenue and market presence. By focusing on sustainable and organic products, the strategy aligns with global trends in health and wellness, offering significant growth opportunities for the region's indigenous plant producers. The initiative also addresses historical export gaps, providing comprehensive support to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the export value chain.
What's Next?
The strategy will involve a province-wide mapping exercise to better understand producer needs and prepare them for export readiness. Producers will receive direct support in promoting their products in selected international markets. The initiative is expected to drive substantial economic benefits while preserving the region's botanical heritage.
