Sikkim captain Leyong Lepcha described the opportunity to play against Rohit Sharma as a dream come true after his team faced Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match in Jaipur on Wednesday. Despite the result, the contest became a memorable occasion for the Sikkim players as Rohit showcased his brilliance, scoring a remarkable 155 off just 94 balls to lead Mumbai to a commanding eight-wicket victory.
Reflecting on the match, Lepcha spoke about the challenge of playing a formidable team and the rare chance to watch one of the modern greats up close.
“It was a great experience. We played pretty well while batting first. And it was a great experience to watch this great man from this close up. I guess he was waiting for the loose balls. During the course
of the game, I thought he respected the good balls and he capitalised on the loose balls. The scoring rate and the strike rate is very high when all these international players play. It was a treat watching him from so close and it was an honour,” Lepcha was quoted as saying to PTI.
Sikkim set a target of 236, which was competitive, but Rohit effortlessly chased it down with his flawless mix of timing, power, and experience. From the start, the Mumbai opener maintained a steady stream of boundaries, punishing any loose deliveries and proving why he is one of the most feared batters in limited-overs cricket.
Lepcha also emphasised what the occasion meant to his teammates, many of whom grew up watching Rohit on television.
“Well absolutely. To be in the same ground and playing the same match with a World Cup winning captain. It is a dream come true for all the guys in Sikkim. Didn’t get a chance to speak to him because he’s always surrounded by security. As you know, he’s a very big player so I hope we get a chance to meet him after the match. I had a few chit chats with him when he was batting,” he added.

Rohit’s century was significant beyond the result. It brought him close to the 14,000-run mark in List A cricket and marked his 37th hundred in this format, adding to the 33 centuries he has scored for India internationally. Remarkably, it was also the fastest List A hundred of his career, surpassing his 63-ball century against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup in Delhi.
