Vaibhav Sooryavanshi opened the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal and scored 36 runs from just 16 balls for Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2026 match against Gujarat Titans on Saturday (May 8). He opened his account by hitting Mohammed Siraj for a six on the first ball of his innings and slammed a total of 3 fours and 3 sixes during his stay at the crease. The three sixes by Vaibhav on Saturday (which came inside 1.3 overs) helped him become the first player to hit 30 sixes in powerplay (1-6 overs) in an IPL season.

The previous record of hitting most sixes in powerplay in an IPL season, as per Cricbuzz, was held by Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed batter from Amritsar had slammed 29 sixes for
Sunrisers Hyderabad in the powerplay overs of the 2024 edition.’
In the ongoing season of the IPL, Abhishek has slammed 27 sixes so far in the powerplay.

The three sixes by Vaibhav in the 230-run chase against GT also helped him extend his tally of sixes to 40 in this year’s IPL. He is only the second Indian after Abhishek Sharma to hit 40 or more sixes in an IPL season.
Abhishek played 16 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 edition of IPL and slammed 42 sixes.
The overall record of hitting most sixes in an IPL season is held by Chris Gayle. Gayle hammered 59 sixes in 15 matches of IPL 2012 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He also slammed 51 sixes for RCB in the 2013 edition of the IPL.
In the list of batters with the most sixes in one edition of IPL, Andre Russell takes the No. 2 position. The former West Indies all-rounder scored 52 sixes for Kolkata Knight Riders in 14 matches of IPL 2019.
Before taking his sixes to 40 in IPL 2026, Vaibhav also became the first teenager to hit 100 sixes in T20s. He needed one maximum in the ongoing match vs GT to take his sixes to 100 in T20s, and he achieved the feat by hitting Mohammed Siraj for a maximum on the first ball of his innings (0.2 of RR innings).
