Technology keeps surprising people in new ways and one moment that has caught everyone’s attention shows just how unexpected these experiences can be. An old yet adorable video featuring two elderly men from
the US inside a driverless cab has once again made people smile because of their honest reactions.
The video was posted by 83-year-old Navy veteran Patriotic Kenny on Instagram. He was travelling with his friend Jerry and a woman named Amanda Kline who had booked the ride for them. The clip is over two years old (Kenny was 81 at the time) but after the veteran reshared it, people began watching it again.
Elderly Men React To Driverless Car
The first video shows Kenny waiting outside with Amanda as their cab arrives. He takes a look at the vehicle and cannot help but notice that it is a Jaguar. “You got a Jaguar,” he says while getting seated on the back seat. Amanda sits in the front passenger seat.
But the real shock comes moments later. Kenny and Jerry see that the driver’s seat is completely empty. Kenny immediately asks, “Where is the guy?” Before they can understand what is going on, the car’s system tells them to “buckle up.” Amanda then instructs the car to take them to a coffee shop. Kenny, still unsure, asks her, “Amanda, do you trust this?”
As the cab starts moving, both men look around with disbelief. Kenny keeps repeating that he cannot believe what is happening. When Amanda checks if he has fastened his seatbelt properly, he replies, “Yes, I want to be buckled.” Jerry also tries to make sense of the situation and touches the driver’s seat to confirm there is truly no one there.
Kenny then turns to Amanda with another question: “How did he get down here?” She explains, “I called it.” Still confused, he asks, “Call who?” Amanda laughs and says, “The car.” Hearing this, Kenny says again, “There’s no guy driver.” Both men admit that they are a little scared. Kenny even says, “In other words, they’re selling these? Cops will see this.”
During one turn, the Navy veteran praises the smooth movement of the vehicle: “I’ll never forget this. The car did a better job than if someone was driving.” Another funny moment occurs when the car slows down and Jerry asks if the gas is low or if they will have to walk to their destination.
In the follow-up clips, the two men continue observing how the car moves. The final video shows the ride finishing and the two elderly men talk about how unreal yet impressive the experience felt.
Internet Can’t Get Enough of the Grandpas’ Reactions
The videos received massive attention online as people flocked to the comment section to share their varied views.
One user commented, “This is the cutest video I’ve ever watched on IG.”
Another said, “Just think of all the technological advances these seniors have seen in their lifetimes. Amazing!’
“I’m 34, we have the same reaction grandpa,” someone else remarked.
A person joked, “Grandpas going to tell this story to his morning group at McDonald’s and NO ONE’S going to believe him.”
“They lived long enough to see what people said would be impossible to them in the 40’s and 50’s,” a viewer noted.
“I used to have nightmares about being a passenger in a driverless car so I wouldn’t do it either,” an individual wrote.
“Bro touched driver seat just to be sure there was no invisible man,” “Protect them at all costs” and “The best generation” are some other remarks.
More About Driverless Cars
Self-driving cars, also called autonomous vehicles, can move with very little or no human control. They use sensors, software and advanced systems to understand the road and navigate safely.
Waymo is one of the leading names in this field and operates commercial robotaxi services in US cities such as Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin.
