Gordon Carey, Alex’s father, attained his heavenly abode in September, and the 34-year-old glanced above after completing his landmark in a nod to his father. Carey’s century rescued the hosts after horrendous start to the game in which the Aussies won the toss and opted to have a bat first.
Australia suffered a blow ahead of the game at Adelaide as star batter Steve Smith was ruled out of the game after he experienced symptoms of vertigo.
Jofra Archer struck early to remove Jake Weatherald for 18, before Travis Head fell to Brydon Carse for 10. Marnus Labuschange was scalped by Archer, before Cameron Green fell for a duck as the English pacer claimed his third wicket of the day.
Usman Khawaja, who came in as a last-minute replacement for Smith, made the most of his opportunity as he steadied the innings alongside Carey.
Khawaja added 82 runs before Will Jacks dismissed the southpaw, before Josh Inglis fell to Josh Tongue while Carse removed Aussie skipper Pat Cummins. Jacks put an end to Carey’s onslaught as the southpaw concluded his innings with a score of 106 runs.
Australia hold a 2-0 lead over the English heading into the third game of the fabled series and have the opportunity to wrap up the series with a win at the Adelaide Oval.
