World Cup-winning cricketers Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol received a hero’s welcome as they returned home to Punjab on Friday. The atmosphere at the airport was electric, with families, fans, and leaders
of the state’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) greeting them with sweets, flowers, and the vibrant beats of the dhol.
The celebrations came just days after the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women’s team created history by clinching its first-ever 50-over World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Harleen Deol, too, spoke about the importance of family support in her journey.
“Girls can bring glory when given freedom and opportunity. My family always supported me. I want to tell parents — give your daughters the freedom to dream. And to the girls, follow your passion and work hard,” she said.
“We always believed we could do well and lift the Cup.”
Hayer, who previously served as Punjab’s Sports Minister, highlighted the state government’s continued commitment to promoting athletes.
“Punjab has a sports-friendly approach. We are proud of our daughters who continue to make the state and the nation proud,” he said.
Echoing his sentiments, Minister Harpal Singh Cheema added,
“On behalf of the Punjab government, I welcome all our daughters who have brought glory to India. They are inspiring many others to excel in sports.”
After the reception, Amanjot and Harleen travelled home in an open vehicle, accompanied by family members, supporters, and ministers amid cheers and celebrations.
Earlier this week, on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the victorious Indian team at his residence, lauding their resilience and remarkable comeback after enduring a tough phase marked by three consecutive defeats.
