The Indian men’s cricket team will face New Zealand in a three-match ODI series from January 11. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t announced India’s squad for the three 50-over matches which will be played on January 11 in Vadodara, January 14 in Rajkot and January 18 in Indore. According to a report in the Times of India on Wednesday (December 31), senior men’s selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar will announce India’s squad for the home series on Saturday (January 3).
“The national selection committee, headed by (former India pacer) Ajit Agarkar, will hold an online meeting on Jan 3 to pick the squad,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the publication.
India last played an ODI series in the first week of December
2025 against South Africa and managed to win the first and third matches under KL Rahul’s leadership. But in the upcoming series against New Zealand, Shubman Gill will captain Team India. Gill was appointed as the new captain of India’s ODI team on October 4, 2025, but he missed the ODI series against South Africa due to a neck injury that he suffered on Day 2 of the first India-South Africa Test, which was played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Gill recovered from the neck injury and played three T20Is against South Africa last month, and now he is set to return to the ODI setup as well.
As per the available information, the BCCI selectors will rest all-rounder Hardik Pandya and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the ODI series against the Black Caps. Bumrah and Pandya played in the T20I series against South Africa and are also part of India’s squad for five T20Is against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup 2026.
Shreyas Iyer is the vice-captain of India’s ODI team, but the Mumbai-based batter is out of action these days due to an injury that he suffered while fielding against Australia in Sydney on October 25.
He was in line to return for the New Zealand ODIs, but according to TOI, Iyer’s return to action has been delayed, and he will undergo rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for another week.
