India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill may have to wait a couple of months before returning to action following a neck injury which is said to be worse than it looks. Gill seemed to have aggravated a neck issue
while batting on the second day of the first Test between India and South Africa in Kolkata, forcing him to be retired hurt after facing just three deliveries. He was subsequently stretchered off to a local hospital where he was kept under observation for a day before being discharged.
Now, multiple reports claim that Gill could miss the remainder of 2025 due to what appears to be a nerve injury for which he has been given an injection to “alleviate his symptoms”.
The 26-year-old left the Kolkata hospital in a neck brace but did travel to Guwahati with the India Test squad for the ongoing second match that got underway from Saturday morning. However, he wasn’t picked in the playing XI, having been ruled out of action on match eve.
Gill flew to Mumbai where he consulted spinal injury specialist Dr Abhay Nene. The medical report has been forwarded to BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Gill Has Nerve Injury
A report in The Times of India claims that Gill has a nerve injury and the team management isn’t looking to rush his comeback given the T20 World Cup in February-March next year. It’s likely that we’ve seen the last of the batting star on the field as far as 2025 is concerned and he could likely return for the New Zealand series that starts from January 11 next year.
When Will Gill Start His Rehab?
Before Gill can start his rehab, he will have to undergo a period of rest and it’s unlikely he will be available for the five-match T20I series against South Africa as well. India are also set to host South Africa for three ODIs from November 30 once the Test series concludes.
In the final leg of the tour, South Africa will play five T20Is from December 9.
“Gill has been given an injection to alleviate his symptoms and will need a period of rest before starting rehab, training and skill work. There is every chance he could also be doubtful for the T20I series,” news agency PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.
