If you had a long weekend coming up, where would you go? Would you pack your bags for a solo escape to the mountains, wander through a heritage city at your own pace, or round up your family and friends for a relaxing hill station holiday?
Travel means different things to different people. For some, it is about wandering through bustling streets with nothing but a backpack and a flexible itinerary. For others, the joy lies in shared laughter on winding hill roads, family pilgrimages or long conversations over scenic sunsets.
New search data from Agoda suggests Indian travellers are increasingly split between these two styles of travel. Solo explorers are choosing destinations that offer freedom, reflection and cultural experiences, while groups
are gravitating towards scenic retreats, spiritual hubs and leisure destinations where the journey is just as memorable as the destination.
Where Are Solo Travellers Planning Their Next Escape?
Agoda’s accommodation search data shows that metropolitan cities continue to dominate solo travel plans. Mumbai and New Delhi emerged as the top two destinations, thanks to their vibrant food scenes, nightlife, cultural attractions and excellent connectivity.
Beyond the metros, solo travellers are also seeking slower, more meaningful experiences. Udaipur continues to charm visitors with its lakeside palaces, heritage architecture and walkable old city, while Tirupati remains a preferred destination for those embarking on solo spiritual journeys.
Nature, too, is playing a growing role. Leh, Munnar and Srinagar have emerged as favourites among travellers looking for Himalayan landscapes, tea plantations, peaceful houseboat stays and opportunities to disconnect from everyday routines.
Destinations Popular Among Group Travellers
While solo travellers seek flexibility, group travellers are focusing on shared experiences.
According to Agoda, pilgrimage destinations continue to attract families and friends travelling together. Puri remains a favourite thanks to the Jagannath Temple, while , Haridwar and Ujjain continue to draw visitors looking for spiritual experiences combined with cultural exploration.
Hill stations also feature prominently on the list. Nainital, Mussoorie and Shimla continue to appeal to groups searching for pleasant weather, mountain views and relaxed holidays away from city life.
Meanwhile, Wayanad reflects the growing popularity of nature-based holidays that offer slower-paced travel, lush greenery and quality time with loved ones.
Gaurav Malik, Country Director, Indian Subcontinent & Indian Ocean Islands, Agoda, said, “Travel preferences are becoming increasingly personal, with solo travellers drawn to destinations that offer relaxation, self-discovery and flexibility and groups continuing to favour places to create shared memories. What stands out is also Goa’s enduring appeal, emerging as a top choice for both solo travellers and groups alike.”
