Train passengers should take note of an important update. On November 22, a significant system upgrade will temporarily suspend several Passenger Reservation System (PRS) services in Delhi, leaving ticket
booking, cancellations, and enquiries unavailable for a few hours.
PRS has greatly simplified travel planning. Passengers can book tickets from anywhere using the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app, avoiding long queues at stations. Both reserved and unreserved tickets can be booked online after creating an account.
Five-Hour Shutdown During System Upgrade
The PRS shutdown will last for five hours, from 11:45 pm on November 22 to 4:45 am on November 23, as Indian Railways switches from the old core system to a new one.
The upgrade has been planned during non-peak hours to minimise inconvenience, as fewer passengers use the services at that time.
Services That Will Be Affected
PRS normally provides a wide range of facilities, but during the transition, you will not be able to access:
- Ticket cancellation
- Current reservation
- Chart preparation
- Internet ticket booking
- PRS status enquiry
- e-DR
- PRIMES application
The core switch is essential to maintaining fast and secure data handling across the railway network.
Dense Fog Disrupts Train Services In North India
Meanwhile, winter conditions are tightening across North India, with dense fog causing major disruptions. Many trains are running significantly late, and several have been cancelled.
According to Indian Railways, 24 major long-route trains, including those to Patna, Ambala, Prayagraj, Amritsar, Kamakhya, Kolkata, Ajmer, and Howrah, have been cancelled for three months, from December 1 to February 28. This will affect millions of passengers across Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and other states.
Routes Shortened For 28 More Trains
In addition, the routes of 28 trains have been curtailed. Many trains that previously operated daily will now run only two to four days a week.
On non-operational days, they will be completely cancelled, but when they do operate, they will follow their earlier timetable.
Important Advice For Travellers
If you are planning to travel during this period, make sure to check the updated status of your train in advance. The full list of cancelled and curtailed trains is available on the railway website and at major stations.
Without checking beforehand, you may end up standing in long queues for cancellations or refunds at the last minute.
