Actor Angad Bedi has often spoken about his father and legendary cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi. In a recent conversation with Maniesh Paul on his podcast, Angad recalled a time when his father was hurt with him
and didn’t speak to him for over a decade. Yes, that’s right, Angad’s father didn’t speak to him for 10 long years, and the reason was that he cut his hair short.
Recalling that time, he shared, “Our parents and that generation were different, and we are different kinds of parents. There are two kinds of sentiments: anger and hurt. When a person is angry, they’ll curse and shout, and then the sentiment is gone. But when a person feels hurt, he goes quiet. I have annoyed my father a lot. Leaving cricket was just one of the reasons. I also got my hair cut.”
Speaking about his reasoning behind cutting his hair, Angad shared, “The reason why I did it is because during that time, Sikhs were made fun of in the industry. We were pushed aside, and people used to say the wrong things. So that hurt me a lot. Initially, I used to give all screen tests wearing a turban, and I even had long hair. Everyone used to say, ‘We don’t want the turban look.’ Look what is happening today. Diljit Dosanjh has taken that look and performed worldwide. Nobody can question that.”
Angad further continued and shared that this hurt his father extremely. While he now regrets taking that decision of cutting his hair, he added, “It is my misfortune that I had to take off my turban; that is my bad luck. My father was extremely hurt, and he was sad. That’s why I think hurt is a deeper emotion than anger. He didn’t talk to me for 10–12 years. I cut my hair when I was 22, and he talked to me when I was 34. Sometimes it takes time, but he talked to me and complimented me for Pink. Told me during the premiere, ‘You’re not that bad, son.’”
Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away in October 2023 at the age of 77, remains one of India’s most celebrated left-arm spinners and former cricket captains. On the personal front, Angad Bedi is now married to actress Neha Dhupia. The couple had their first child, daughter Mehr, in November 2018. Their son Guriq was born in October 2021, completing their family of four.
