New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) Delhi will host the 13th BRICS Urbanisation Forum on June 11-12, with the event expected to deepen cooperation among member nations on addressing common urban challenges and promoting people-centric, resilient and sustainable cities.
Announcing the forum at a pre-event press conference on Monday, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal said the event would be a key ministerial engagement under India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026 and would be guided by the theme of “Cities for People: BRICS Cooperation for Inclusive and Resilient Urban Futures”.
The minister said that the forum assumes significance at a time when BRICS nations are witnessing rapid urbanisation and grappling with challenges related to housing, mobility,
climate risks, municipal governance, urban finance and delivery of civic services.
He said the platform would enable member countries to exchange policy experiences, identify shared priorities and contribute urban inputs to the broader BRICS process.
According to the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, India has played a pioneering role in shaping the BRICS urban agenda, having hosted the first Urbanisation Forum in New Delhi in 2013.
The country also hosted the event in Visakhapatnam in 2016 and virtually in 2021, focusing on sustainable urban development and post-pandemic urban recovery.
The ministry said the two-day forum will bring together ministers, senior government representatives, policymakers, urban practitioners and experts from all 11 BRICS member countries that have been invited to participate.
The discussions will focus on inclusive urban development, climate and disaster-resilient infrastructure, strengthening municipal institutions and leveraging digital innovation for improved urban governance.
The Union minister said India looks forward to welcoming delegates from across the BRICS family to New Delhi and to working together on cities that are truly for people. PTI BUN DIV DIV
