Typhoon Threat Looms Over India-Japan One-Off T20I As Heavy Rain Warning Issued

Typhoon Dujuan, which has brought parts of eastern Japan to a standstill over the past two days, disrupted the Asian Games on Monday, forcing the equestrian events to be postponed until Tuesday.

Although the Games have till now avoided adverse weather, organisers decided to postpone the event as a precautionary measure.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that conditions could worsen, with the typhoon forecast to pass close to the Tokyo metropolitan area later in the day.

Heavy rain has already lashed parts of the Izu Islands, Chiba Prefecture and other Pacific coastal areas, with some locations receiving more than 300mm (12 inches) of rainfall since Saturday, September 19.

The JMA warned that heavy rain could intensify from Monday afternoon

as the typhoon approaches the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. Notably, the Sano International Cricket Ground in Kanto is set to host the India-Japan one-off T20I on Tuesday.

Authorities warned that linear rain bands could develop over Kanto and central Japan, raising the risk of flash floods and other rain-related disasters.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Dujuan forced the cancellation of at least 275 flights across Japan on Monday, with authorities warning of record-breaking rainfall as the storm approaches Tokyo.

The typhoon, accompanied by strong winds, also prompted the early closure of one of the world’s biggest video game trade fairs in the capital and left thousands without power.

“The total rainfall through Tuesday could exceed the average monthly rainfall for September, resulting in record-breaking heavy rain,” the JMA said.

The typhoon’s wind speeds were at 144 kilometres per hour as the storm was 110 kilometres from Hachijojima, one of Tokyo’s farthest islands.

Japan Airlines cancelled 120 domestic and 15 international flights, while All Nippon Airways cancelled 140 domestic flights.

Railway operators in Tokyo and neighbouring regions suspended services on some lines.

Tokyo Game Show, one of the world’s biggest video game trade fairs, which kicked off on Thursday, was called off on Monday, its final day.
