About Sergio Gor
Gor was nominated as the next US Ambassador to India and as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs by US President Donald Trump on August 22, 2025.
His appointment came at a sensitive moment in India–US relations, amid trade tensions and disputes over tariffs. Gor remains in his personnel role until Senate confirmation.
India-US Tensions Over Tariff
On September 1, US President Donald Trump announced new 25 per cent “reciprocal” tariffs on Indian exports, claiming the move was aimed at balancing what he called “unfair trade practices.”
The decision immediately triggered concern in New Delhi, which described the move as “unjustified and unilateral.” The new tariff covered a wide range of Indian goods — from textiles and gems to seafood — disrupting nearly US 12 billion in annual exports to the US.
