The bitter legal battle over the estimated Rs 30,000 crore estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur has taken a dramatic turn, with his mother, Rani Kapur, approaching the Delhi High Court with a fresh
civil suit challenging the validity of a family trust and levelling serious allegations against her daughter-in-law, Priya Kapur Sachdev.
In her petition, the 80-year-old Rani Kapur has questioned the legality of the “Rani Kapur Family Trust”, describing it as “fraudulent” and alleging that it was created through manipulation and conspiracy. She has claimed that the trust was used to unlawfully divert control over family assets and dispossess her of properties that she says rightfully belong to her.
According to the suit, Rani Kapur has accused Priya Kapur Sachdev of manipulating her late son into committing what she has termed a “fraud”. The petition alleges that Priya, acting in concert with others, carried out a “series of malafide and illegal acts” following Sunjay Kapur’s death to seize control of the Sona Group and its associated assets.
Rani Kapur has maintained before the high court that Sunjay Kapur died under “mysterious circumstances”, a claim that adds another layer of complexity to the already contentious family dispute. The suit alleges that immediately after his death, Priya Kapur Sachdev acted with undue haste and intent, taking crucial decisions during the 13-day mourning period to consolidate control over the group’s affairs.
The suit claims that Priya’s actions during this period were aimed at sidelining Rani Kapur and excluding her from decision-making related to the family business and estate.
Rani Kapur has sought a permanent injunction restraining Priya Kapur Sachdev and others from using, operating, or acting at the behest of the contested trust. She has also asked the court to prevent any further alienation or transfer of assets allegedly linked to the trust until the dispute is adjudicated.
The allegations come as a fresh blow to Priya Kapur Sachdev whose call detail records recently went viral on social media, revealing that she was purportedly in Delhi, and not in Gurugram, on the day her husband’s will was executed.
The alleged records suggest that Priya Kapur’s cellphone was not located in Gurugram on March 21, 2025—the day she has stated on affidavit before the Delhi High Court that she was physically present during the execution of Sunjay Kapur’s will. Priya Kapur’s phone, according to the records, was connected to cell towers in New Delhi on that date between 9.22am and 4.30pm.
According to legal experts, the contradiction raises eyebrows because Priya Kapur’s claimed presence forms a key part of her account surrounding the will.
The case is expected to intensify the high-profile family feud, turning the succession battle over the Sunjay Kapur estate into a closely watched legal and corporate saga before the Delhi High Court.
