Fans hoping for an update on Kaithi 2 were left hanging after Lokesh Kanagaraj announced his next collaboration with Allu Arjun. Karthi, the star of the original Kaithi (2019), recently stepped into theatres with his new release Vaa Vaathiyaar, but when the inevitable question about the sequel came up, he politely sidestepped it.
Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar hit cinemas on January 14, 2026, after several delays, and the actor attended a special screening over the weekend. When asked about Kaithi 2, he smiled and said, “He [Lokesh] will address that,” leaving fans guessing about the sequel’s progress. Instead, Karthi focused on his current film, expressing satisfaction over the audience’s positive response and extending warm Pongal wishes to fans.
Kaithi 2 has been on the radar for a while. Back in 2022, Karthi had mentioned that the sequel would kick off the following year. The film is expected to be a key chapter in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s expanding cinematic universe, which includes the recent Vikram, starring Kamal Haasan. Karthi made a voice cameo in Vikram, hinting at connections between the films. Suriya, who appeared briefly as an antagonist in Vikram, is also speculated to play a role in the sequel.
For context, the original Kaithi revolved around Karthi’s character, a parolee trying to see his daughter for the first time. When he encounters a police officer, he reluctantly joins forces to tackle drug lords attempting to hijack a cocaine shipment. The story unfolds over a tense, four-hour night, making it a gripping, edge-of-the-seat thriller that won both critical acclaim and box-office success.
