Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly been in “direct contact” with former England manager Gareth Southgate as Ruben Amorim’s position at Old Trafford comes under intense scrutiny.
The Portuguese boss faces mounting pressure after a damaging 3-1 defeat at Brentford on Saturday, leaving United languishing in 14th place and struggling to implement his preferred 3-4-3 system.
Amorim Unfazed Despite Scrutiny
Despite the poor run of form, Amorim insists he is not worried about his job.
“I am always comfortable with the job. I am not concerned, it is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I am here,” he said.
He added, “When you lose, you go back to the same place and fight again for one win that can help you to create
the momentum.”
Under Amorim, United have garnered only 33 points from 34 Premier League games, a slump that has fueled speculation about a managerial change.
Southgate on the Radar
Reports from talkSPORT suggest that Southgate is on a three-man shortlist of potential replacements, alongside Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.
Southgate, who previously declined United’s approach last year to take a break from management, is now reportedly open to returning, with Ratcliffe in direct contact in recent weeks.
United’s Cautious Approach
Despite the speculation, the club hierarchy appears reluctant to act immediately.
BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reports that minority owner Ratcliffe remains supportive of Amorim, believing it is fair to allow him to see out the season.
Moreover, United would likely delay any decision until after November 1 to reduce compensation costs, highlighting a pragmatic approach amid mounting pressure.
Amorim’s Reinforcements
Amorim’s summer signings, including attackers Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha for nearly £200 million, plus new goalkeeper Senne Lammens, were intended to bolster the squad.
Despite this investment, United have struggled to find consistency, although the club has denied drawing up any shortlist of potential replacements, insisting Amorim remains in charge.
