Amid the concerns over rising air pollution in the national capital, the Delhi government has decided to make two major anti-pollution measures permanent, announced Environment Minister Manjinder Singh
Sirsa on Saturday.
As a part of the new plan, the restrictions earlier enforced under the strict GRAP-4 stage will now continue even when emergency measures are not in place.
Speaking about the decision, Sirsa said that vehicles will no longer be allowed to purchase fuel in Delhi without a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC).
“From now on, it has been decided that out of the restrictions under GRAP-4, we have made two restrictions permanent. The first one is PUCC. You will not get petrol anywhere without a PUCC certificate,” he said.
The second permanent measure targets vehicles entering the city from outside Delhi.
According to Sirsa, non-Delhi vehicles that do not meet Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) emission standards will face restrictions on entering the capital. The move is aimed at reducing pollution caused by older, high-emission vehicles.
Sirsa said the government has taken these steps keeping in mind repeated episodes of severe air pollution during winter months. He also warned that weather conditions could once again worsen air quality in the coming days.
“The possibility of bad weather is being indicated. Due to the Western Disturbance again, the weather may remain bad. Therefore, we are monitoring,” he said.
The minister added that the government wants to act in advance rather than wait for pollution levels to reach emergency levels. “Our effort is that the people of Delhi do not have to face such challenges again,” he said, referring to earlier periods when strict curbs caused inconvenience to residents.
