Delhi BMW Accident: The Delhi Police on Tuesday questioned Parikshit Makkar, husband of Gaganpreet, the accused woman who was driving the BMW car, which hit and killed a Finance Ministry official in the national capital on Sunday.
Parikshit, who was brought to the police station for questioning after being discharged from the hospital, told the police that he had no idea how the accident happened and the tragedy unfolded.
According to Parikshit, Gaganpreet said she was taking the victim to the hospital. Parikshit then told his father-in-law about his wife bringing the injured to his hospital. Parikshit himself took a taxi and left for the hospital, according to Delhi Police.
Parikshit told the police, “My wife told me she was taking them along.
I informed my father-in-law that they needed treatment and that they were on the way. After that, I left in another taxi,” news agency PTI reported.
The police will now corroborate the statement and other evidence to verify the sequence of events.
Navjot Singh (52), Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, succumbed to his injuries, while his wife suffered severe injuries after a BMW allegedly hit his motorcycle near Delhi Cantonment metro station on Ring Road on Sunday.
The Delhi Police arrested Gaganpreet on Monday after an FIR was filed against her by the victim’s wife.
Earlier on Monday, Gaganpreet denied any wrongdoing in the accident.
Over the allegations that she transported the injured couple not to the nearest facility but to a hospital about 20 km away from the accident spot, the accused woman told the police that she took the couple to Nuelife Hospital as she had been there previously.
According to the police, she told investigators that her daughter had been treated during the pandemic at this particular facility, so she took the injured couple there.
Meanwhile, in the FIR, the victim’s wife had alleged that Gaganpreet deliberately avoided taking her injured husband to the nearest hospital despite her repeated requests.
“I repeatedly requested the lady (accused) to take my husband to the nearest hospital, my husband needs immediate first aid. But she deliberately did not take my husband to the nearest hospital and instead took him to a faraway hospital known to them. My husband had to wait too long on a stretcher there,” Singh’s wife stated in her complaint.
The couple’s son, Navnoor Singh also echoed similar sentiments, saying that his father’s life could have been saved had he been taken to a nearby hospital, rather than a facility nearly 20 km away.
However, as reported earlier, Gangpreet’s father, identified as Javinder Singh, served as a director of Nulife Hospital and Maternity Centre in GTB Nagar, and the police are considering this a possible reason for taking the injured couple here.
Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Monday sent the accused woman to a two-day judicial custody.
