The Central Railway is set to introduce 14 new air-conditioned (AC) local train services on Mumbai’s suburban network, offering commuters a more comfortable travel experience, officials said.
The new AC locals will operate on the CSMT–Panvel Harbour line and will replace existing non-AC services. The move is aimed at meeting rising passenger demand for air-conditioned trains on the Harbour corridor.
With the addition of these services, the total number of AC local trains running under Central Railway will increase to 94, comprising 80 services on the main line and 14 on the Harbour line. Officials clarified that the overall number of suburban services will remain unchanged at 1,820, as the new AC trains will substitute existing non-AC locals.
In a statement, Central Railway said the new services will be introduced from January 26, 2026. “Central Railway will introduce 14 AC local services on CSMT–Panvel Harbour line with effect from 26.01.2026. These services are in fulfilment of passengers’ demand for AC local services on the Harbour line and will be introduced as replacement of existing non-AC services,” the release said.
The move follows a steady expansion of AC local services on Mumbai’s suburban network as part of efforts to improve commuter comfort and modernise urban rail travel.
