Delhi Capitals are set for a major shake-up ahead of 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL), with reports indicating that Rishabh Pant is set for a sensational return. The wicketkeeper-batter, who spent the last two seasons with Lucknow Super Giants after leaving Delhi, is understood to be close to rejoining his former franchise in a high-profile trade deal.
The proposed move is expected to involve star spinner Kuldeep Yadav heading in the opposite direction to Lucknow Super Giants. Reports suggest that the agreement is nearly finalised, with the relevant paperwork already submitted to the BCCI for approval.
The possibility of Pant’s return has sparked discussion over the future of KL Rahul at Delhi Capitals. Former India and Karnataka fast bowler Dodda
Ganesh believes KL Rahul should consider entering the auction if Pant rejoins the franchise.
“KL Rahul should ask for release and go to the auction if Pant comes back,” Ganesh wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Pant Vs Rahul?
Pant and Rahul experienced vastly different IPL 2026 campaigns. Pant, who joined Lucknow for a record INR 27 crore, endured a difficult season, scoring 312 runs as the franchise finished at the bottom of the table. Following the campaign, he stepped down from the captaincy.
Rahul, meanwhile, enjoyed an outstanding season despite Delhi missing out on the playoffs. The experienced batter amassed 593 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 174.41, including an unbeaten 152 against Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
More Changes At DC
Delhi Capitals also appear set for significant changes off the field. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is expected to join the franchise’s support staff. Pant had worked closely with Yuvraj before IPL 2026, making the development particularly notable.
Pant remains one of Delhi’s most important figures, having represented the franchise in 111 matches between 2016 and 2024 while also captaining the side across three seasons.
The management structure is also likely to undergo changes, with former India captain Sourav Ganguly expected to return as head of cricketing affairs. Current head coach Hemang Badani’s future, on the other hand, appears uncertain after Delhi finished sixth in the IPL 2026 standings.
