China will take over the BRICS presidency next year after India concluded its year-long chairmanship with the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Sunday. The two-day summit, held at Bharat Mandapam on September 12-13, brought together leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, outreach invitees and heads of international organisations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, who attended the summit, said on Saturday that China would assume the presidency in 2027. He described BRICS as the world’s most influential platform for cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Xi on China taking over the grouping’s presidency. The two leaders also held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit,
reviewing the India-China relationship and exchanging views on issues of mutual interest.
In a post on X, Modi said he had reviewed the “full range” of India-China relations with Xi and conveyed his best wishes for China’s BRICS presidency.
Addressing the summit, Xi also said the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the Gulf region had caused serious losses to people and did not serve the common interests of the international community. He said China was willing to work with fellow BRICS members to contribute to peace and stability in the region.
BRICS Presidency In Last Five Years
Over the past five years, the BRICS presidency has rotated among member countries. China held the presidency in 2022, followed by South Africa in 2023, Russia in 2024 and Brazil in 2025. India assumed the presidency in 2026 and hosted the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. China will take over the chairmanship again in 2027.
