Rohit Sharma’s fitness and workload management concerns surrounding Jasprit Bumrah are expected to dominate discussions when India’s selectors meet on Tuesday to pick squads for next month’s one-off Test and three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
Bumrah’s availability across formats remains uncertain because of the tight turnaround after the IPL, while Rohit’s fitness will also come under close scrutiny following his recent hamstring issue during the tournament. The former Indian captain missed several games for the Mumbai Indians and featured only as an Impact Player in their most recent outing against the Punjab Kings.
Selectors are expected to adopt a cautious approach regarding Rohit’s return to full-time ODI duties, especially given
the physical demands of fielding for 100 overs.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is expected to feature prominently in India’s ODI plans after delivering another outstanding IPL campaign. With both Rohit and Kohli now focusing exclusively on the 50-over format at international level, the Afghanistan series is likely to give India a clearer indication of how the senior duo fits into preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Importance of One-Off Test
The one-off Test, beginning in Mullanpur on June 6, shortly after the IPL final in Ahmedabad, carries added importance following India’s recent struggles in the longest format, particularly on spin-friendly home surfaces. India’s batting issues against spin were exposed during the home series against the South Africa national cricket team last November, and the team is still searching for a dependable No. 3 since the exit of Cheteshwar Pujara.
With Sai Sudharsan having failed to cement his place, Devdutt Padikkal could be given an extended opportunity during the home season.
Among the bowling options, Jammu and Kashmir pacer Aquib Nabi has reportedly come onto the selectors’ radar after claiming 60 wickets in a remarkable Ranji Trophy campaign. Young fast bowler Prince Yadav is also being considered for the ODI squad after impressing with his pace and accuracy in the IPL.
If Bumrah is rested, Mohammed Siraj is likely to lead the pace attack, with Prasidh Krishna also expected to feature. Meanwhile, concerns remain over Hardik Pandya, who has been managing back spasms during the IPL.
