A simple question about living with parents turned into a viral debate on the social media platform X. A user named Mahima Jalan shared how a prospective groom asked if she was “comfortable living with his
parents,” claiming he had faced rejections before.
What went viral wasn’t just the groom’s question but her reaction as she was surprised to learn about girls’ choice to live separately from their in-laws.
“Spoke to a guy for shaadi and his first question was, “Are you comfortable living with my parents? I have faced rejections before since I live with them.” Tbh it shocked me. How can girls be uncomfortable living with in-laws?,” she wrote on X.
Mahima shared that she has lived with her parents all her life, experienced strict parenting, and had disagreements with them multiple times. But doesn’t make her against the idea of living with parents.
“But does that make me anti the concept of living with them? No way. Wondering what’s happening to the girls,” she added.

How Did The Internet React?
Her post quickly ignited a debate over the “fundamental difference” between living with one’s own parents and living with in-laws.
One person commented that her experience of living with her parents her whole life is not the same for everyone. Choosing to live separately from in-laws is just a personal preference.
“You lived with your parents all your life; others didn’t. Many have moved out for college/work and have grown into a different lifestyle. Imagine someone who moved out of their parents’ home at 18. It doesn’t seem that far-fetched that they may still want to live a certain way after marriage and into their 30s and 40s,” he wrote.
“It doesn’t seem that wild a choice to me, both kinds of choices work for different kinds of people,” the person further said.
To which Mahima replied, “You have a valid point here. But I personally find the concept of living with family wholesome. Very desi. But yes I should not be expecting from others too.”
Another person shared, “Different people have different experiences. Some genuinely come from toxic families, and from their pov, their choices make complete sense. Also, choosing not to live with your in-laws doesn’t mean you’re abandoning them. You can live separately and still support them with respect and care.”
The In-laws Dynamic
“The dynamic of living with in-laws is fundamentally different from living with one’s own parents. It involves adapting to a new household’s rules and hierarchy, which is why many women prioritise independent living, not because they’re “anti-family,” wrote the next.
“Different individuals can have different choices of living. If someone’s choice doesn’t match with yours, it doesn’t mean there is something wrong with them,” commented another.
While some users argued that adjusting to a family with in-laws is fundamentally different, others said it’s just a matter of mindset and flexibility.
