Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on Wednesday (April 22) became the first cricketer in IPL history to make 500 competition runs in under 250 deliveries. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals sensation is now the fastest to the record (by balls), taking only 227 balls for it.
The previous best was Glenn Maxwell (260), followed by Punjab Kings’ Priyansh Arya (280), India legend Virender Sehwag (280), and Mumbai Indians’ Naman Dhir (283). Sooryavanshi got to the record after scoring two runs against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium.
Sooryavanshi scored 252 runs in his debut IPL season, where he won the award for the best striker of the season at the age of 14 for a rate of 206.56 per 100 balls. In 2026, he has gone up to another level, surpassing that tally
in this match with a better strike-rate of 235.
Against LSG, he got out soon after reaching the milestone, for an atypical 8 (11). It was not just his fourth-lowest score in the IPL, but also the first time he ended an innings (except the two occasions he has gotten out for a duck) with a strike-rate of under 100 in his nascent career.
The left-hander started as usual, smashing Prince Yadav for two fours on his first two balls in the innings. It fizzled out when left-armer Mohsin Khan came into the attack.
RR were already two down with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Dhruv Jurel removed by Mohammed Shami early. Mohsin, returning to the 11 after an injury layoff, used that pressure by restraining Sooryavanshi with length balls that gave him no room.
The youngster played him defensively at first but started missing when he wanted to change gears, leading to a wild shot on a wide sixth ball, which went high and dropped down for a good catch from Digvesh Rathi. Mohsin’s over became a crucial wicket maiden, which might give some hints to other IPL franchises on stopping Sooryavanshi.
