Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal left the likes of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan in his stride by becoming the first Indian to score two ODI centuries in less than seven matches.
Jaiswal hit his second ton in the format against Afghanistan in Chennai on Saturday, following up on his century against South Africa in Vizag in December 2025. Just like that series last year, Jaiswal was not the first choice against Afghanistan and got the opportunity only because Virat Kohli was injured.
Opening the innings alongside his former Test partner Rohit Sharma, Jaiswal smashed an unbeaten 110 runs off 86 balls, with 14 fours and three sixes. The previous fastest to the record was Dhawan, who took seven innings for his two ODI centuries, with Kedar Jadhav
(9), Kohli (17) and Shubman Gill (18) closely behind.
The left-hander came out with attacking intent from the outset, capitalising on Azmatullah Omarzai’s erratic opening over and quickly putting the bowlers under pressure with a series of crisp cuts and drives. He continued to dominate the seamers, pulling Fareed Ahmad for six and regularly finding the boundary through the off side. Jaiswal’s positive approach helped him bring up a fluent half-century in just 37 balls.
Having laid the foundation, he rotated strike efficiently against spinners Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi while punishing loose deliveries. The consolidation meant he needed 46 more deliveries to move from fifty to a hundred. The milestone came spectacularly, with an inside-out six to Nabi.
Moments later, he fittingly finished the match with another six over long-on, sealing India’s 3-0 series win.
“I really enjoyed,” he said after the match. “Initially, I got some runs in the powerplay, so I just wanted to keep going and play till the end. I just focus on my process, what is in my control and try to work hard as much as I can. And of course, there is always support from the support staff and they have been amazing to me. The communication is unreal. So I know what’s going on… Of course, Rohit bhaiya [is] always helpful. And I always ask a lot of questions to him and try to implement them in the game itself,” he added.
