An Indian software engineer working in Germany has gone viral online after sharing his experience of repaying a Rs 53 lakh home loan in just six years — a personal milestone that struck a chord with many.
Posting on Reddit’s r/delhi community, the techie titled his post, “I paid off Rs 53 lakh home loan in 6 years,” and reflected on the lessons learned during the journey, admitting that the financial pressure took a toll on his mental health.
“Just wanted to share a personal milestone and some lessons that might help others. I took a home loan of Rs 53 lakhs in Sept 2019 and finally paid it off in Nov 2025. It took me six years,” he wrote.
‘Mental Pressure Is Real’
The engineer cautioned others about the emotional and psychological stress that comes with large loans. “If you’re an overthinker or deal with anxiety, avoid taking a home loan. The mental pressure is real,” he advised.
He revealed that he paid a total of Rs 67 lakh, including Rs 14 lakh in interest, and credited his move abroad for helping him clear the debt faster.
“Buying a house is emotional at first, but that fades when maintenance issues start piling up. Owning a home means owning its problems too,” he said. “On paper, my home is worth Rs 1 crore now, but my bank balance is nearly empty. So yeah, net worth does not equal liquidity.”
Lessons in Hustle And Money Management
Despite the stress, the techie acknowledged a few positives. According to him, having a home loan pushed him to work harder, seek bonuses, and manage his money more effectively.
“A home loan can motivate you to hustle harder and plan your finances better,” he wrote, noting that the experience taught him valuable lessons in discipline and financial independence.
