The 2025 ceremony to hand over football’s most prestigious award, the Ballon d’Or, will be held at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on Monday, September 22.
Considered the biggest individual prize in the great game, the Ballon d’Or is bestowed upon football’s finest club or international performer for the year.
In May 2025, the organisers confirmed the new criteria to identify the most deserving Ballon d’Or recipient in a sport full of great footballers in the club and international playing scene across the world.
Criteria Used To Decide Ballon d’Or Winner
With the aim to “crown the best footballer of the year based on true merit” with no heavy emphasis on lifetime achievements, the UEFA confirmed it prioritises three major factors: (a) individual
performances, particularly the brilliance, decisiveness and influence of a player on the pitch, (b) collective success based on the number of titles won for their club or national team and (c) sportsmanship and fair play.
The Ballon d’Or award will be given to both the best male and female footballers of the world. On the men’s front, Lamine Yamal, Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe and Mohamed Salah are considered the frontrunners for the incredible title. Among the quartet, Dembele is being hailed as the favourite for the prestigious award after his magnificent run, including four titles, with Paris Saint-Germain last season.
Of the other three, Yamal was spectacular for Barcelona and helped Spain lift the Euro 2024 crown. Not far behind, Mbappe and Salah also performed brilliantly for Real Madrid and Liverpool, respectively.
Apart from the best player, also honoured at the night will be the recipients of the Gerd Muller Trophy and the Lev Yashin Trophy for the top scorer and the best goalkeeper of the year, respectively, among several other awards.
