The FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off, and the welcome ceremonies in America and Canada were a celebration of the game, music and culture.
On Friday, singer Katy Perry performed at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Los Angeles. The 41-year-old took the stage wearing a shimmering silver sequin dress from Stella McCartney’s Fall/Winter 2026 collection. She wore the sculptural fringe dress with a pair of see-through wedge mules and silver jewellery.
Katy Perry helped close out the star-studded celebration ahead of the United States’ tournament-opening match against Paraguay. She shared the stage with 10-year-old Tius Luka, a young singer from Norway who appeared on her track “Wonder”, which is part of her 2024 album 143.
Luka sang the opening and closing lines of the song. At the end of their duet, Katy Perry lifted him into an embrace as the crowd at Los Angeles’ SoFi stadium cheered.
The singer shared that Luka had recorded his part of the song in 2021 when he was five years old. “I heard his vocals in 2023 and was inspired to write the verses for ‘Wonder’ and added it to my sixth album,” she wrote. “Tius is 10 now and flew all the way to LA from Norway to sing this song with me.”
Earlier in the day, musicians Future and Tyla kicked off the World Cup ceremony with a performance of “Game Time”, which is the seventh single from the official 2026 FIFA World Cup album. They were followed by performances by Lisa of Blackpink, Brazilian icon Anitta, and Nigerian superstar Rema, who delivered “Goals”, another World Cup track.
The three of them wore all white during their performance. Lisa, who is a member of the popular K-pop girl band BLACKPINK, wore a skimpy white outfit, something that is iconic to the singer. She wore a corset-type, cropped top that the singer paired with a harness-designed micro white shorts bottom. She completed the look with a pair of knee-high, lace-up platform boots. Another signature element to her World Cup outfit was her fingerless white gloves, which she added.
Across the border, in Canada, the opening ceremony took place before the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina that took place today in Toronto. The ceremony featured performances from Michael Bublé, Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Eliana, Jessie Reyes, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream, and William Prince.
The actor-turned-singer wore a sporty fit. It included a cropped red, corset-type t-shirt with a lace-up detail in the front that showed off her chiselled abs. It was designed in the shape of a heart. It had a micro red and white jacket layered on it, and she added a pair of track pants that featured circular cut-outs. White sneakers and a belly ring rounded off her look. She sang her football anthem with performers Vegedream and Sanjoy.
