Bengali cinema icon Prosenjit Chatterjee received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 25, 2026. The veteran actor was honoured in the field of Art for his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema.
In visuals from the ceremony, Prosenjit was seen dressed in an elegant cream kurta as he walked up to receive the honour from the President. The actor accepted the medal and citation with folded humility, marking a proud moment not just for his family and fans, but also for Bengali cinema.
Prosenjit Chatterjee Receives Padma Shri
The Padma Awards 2026 ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, where several eminent personalities from different fields were honoured. Among the entertainment industry names
recognised this year were Prosenjit Chatterjee, R. Madhavan and others, while Malayalam superstar Mammootty received the Padma Bhushan.
The government had announced the Padma Awards on the eve of Republic Day 2026. This year’s list included 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri awards.
Prosenjit was named as a Padma Shri awardee from West Bengal in the field of Art. According to The Telegraph, he was among 11 people from Bengal selected for Padma honours this year.
Prosenjit Chatterjee’s Contribution To Indian Cinema
Prosenjit Chatterjee, fondly known as Bumba Da, remains one of the most recognisable and influential faces of Bengali cinema. Over a career spanning more than four decades, the actor has worked in hundreds of films and played a major role in shaping mainstream Bengali cinema for multiple generations.
He has appeared in acclaimed films such as Chokher Bali, Autograph, Baishe Srabon, Moner Manush, Jaatishwar, Shankhachil, Shob Charitro Kalponik, Aparajita Tumi and several others. His career has moved across commercial cinema, literary adaptations, thrillers, art-house dramas and contemporary streaming projects.
Beyond Bengali cinema, Prosenjit has also appeared in Hindi projects such as Shanghai, Traffic, Jubilee and Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, introducing his craft to newer national audiences.
Prosenjit Had Dedicated The Honour To His Mother
After his Padma Shri recognition was announced earlier this year, Prosenjit had expressed gratitude and said that the honour belonged not just to him, but to everyone who shaped his journey. He had also dedicated the recognition to his late mother, acknowledging her sacrifices and the role his family played in his career.
The actor had earlier said that receiving the Padma Shri was not merely a personal achievement, but a moment of pride for Bengali cinema as well.
With the Padma Shri now formally conferred on him, Prosenjit Chatterjee joins the list of artists whose work has left a lasting imprint on Indian cinema.
