Kolkata, Jul 31 (PTI) Officials in West Bengal are geared up for the Census 2027 exercise in the state, which will begin on Saturday with a two-week self-enumeration phase, allowing residents to submit their household details online before enumerators undertake door-to-door verification.
The exercise is part of the nationwide programme, which is being held after a gap of 15 years, officials said.
The self-enumeration facility will remain open till August 14 through the dedicated census portal https:e.census.gov.in, after which enumerators will visit households from August 16 for the house listing and housing census.
The exercise, the first digital census in the country, will collect information on housing conditions, household composition and access
to basic amenities, with the population count scheduled for February 2027.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to do his self-enumeration on the first day of the exercise at the Irrigation Bungalow in Salt Lake, Kolkata, the officials said.
South 24 Parganas district is fully prepared for the self-enumeration phase of the Census 2027, DM Abhishek Kumar Tiwari said.
The district has established 37 charge offices, comprising 29 blocks, seven municipalities and one industrial township, and created 14,399 house listing blocks for the exercise, he said.
A total of 17,222 enumerators and 2,939 supervisors have been deployed for the field operations, the district magistrate said.
To ensure smooth implementation, 276 field trainers were deployed to impart training to all enumerators and supervisors, he said.
Tiwari said the district administration has drawn up a comprehensive awareness and facilitation plan for the self-enumeration period.
The initiatives include self-enumeration demonstration centres, help desks, facilitation camps, awareness tableaux, IEC campaigns and social media outreach.
The district administration will also coordinate with common service centres, cyber cafes, educational institutions, health facilities and local bodies to assist citizens in completing the self-enumeration process, he said.
Appealing to residents to actively participate in the exercise, Tiwari said public cooperation would be crucial for ensuring an accurate, inclusive and successful Census. PTI SMY CORR BSM BDC
