Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz, who scored his first goal for the Premier League champions in their 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton, is starting to settle at the Merseyside club and will continue to improve, believes to manager Arne Slot.
The 22-year-old had gone more than 20 appearances without scoring for Liverpool before netting the winner in Saturday’s match. Slot noted that Wirtz’s performances had been undervalued due to the football industry’s focus on statistics.

“I’m quite sure it was a relief for him. This was evident from his reaction after scoring the goal, and I saw the same reaction from his teammates. They were genuinely happy
for him,” Slot said.
“In football – and perhaps rightly so – we are primarily judged on results, and individuals are mainly judged on goals and assists. Sometimes we forget the other contributions made during a game.”

The Dutch manager encouraged Wirtz, who arrived at Anfield in June for a reported fee of £100 million, with an additional £16 million in potential bonuses, to keep pushing forward after ending his goal drought.
“He’s had several good games for us, and I believe he improves with each game he plays. He is getting fitter and was getting closer to scoring his first goal,” he added.
“It wasn’t a surprise to me that he scored today, but he would probably be the first to acknowledge that one goal is not enough. He will score many more goals for us, but I also appreciated his overall performance today. He was exceptional in many moments,” the Liverpool boss added.
