Fresh courtroom developments emerged on Friday in the alleged dowry death case of Twisha Sharma, as her husband Samarth Singh surrendered in Jabalpur nearly 10 days after her death on May 12.
The developments came amid allegations from Twisha Sharma’s family and lawyer that Samarth Singh was receiving special treatment inside the district court premises before being taken into custody.
At the same time, another major legal development took place when Samarth Singh’s legal team reportedly sought custody of Twisha Sharma’s body, citing Hindu customs and rituals and arguing that it should be handed over to her husband. The court, however, rejected the plea.
Family lawyer alleges ‘VIP treatment’
Twisha Sharma’s family lawyer, Anurag Srivastava, strongly objected to the manner in which
Samarth Singh was allegedly treated inside the Jabalpur district court.
According to Srivastava, Samarth Singh was sitting inside Courtroom No. 32, the courtroom of the District and Sessions Judge, shortly before appearing before the media. He claimed the courtroom doors were shut while Samarth remained inside.
After days of public pressure, social media outrage and a forced CBI transfer, the MP police had finally taken Twisha Sharma’s husband into custody. His bar license has also been suspended.

“He should’ve surrendered before the trial court in Bhopal, the investigating officer, SIT or CBI. But he came to Jabalpur,” Srivastava said.
He further alleged that Samarth Singh was sitting inside the district judge’s courtroom wearing a mask with the lights switched off and the judge absent from the dais.
“There were three clerks present there. I asked them in what capacity they had kept him there. They had no answer,” he claimed.

Srivastava alleged that when Samarth Singh saw him, he fled from the courtroom and later sat inside the Bar Association chamber.
Family raises questions over influence
Twisha Sharma’s cousin Ashish Sharma also questioned the manner in which Samarth Singh appeared at the court premises. “Samarth Singh has not been arrested. He was only made available there,” he alleged.
Ashish Sharma described him as “an accused from an influential family” who allegedly used the system whenever required.
The allegations have added to repeated claims made by Twisha Sharma’s family that Samarth Singh and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, used their influence to delay action in the case. The allegations became more serious because a lookout notice had already been issued against Samarth Singh and a reward of Rs 30,000 announced for information leading to his arrest.
Twisha Sharma’s lawyer claimed that despite this, Samarth Singh was moving freely and was not being treated like an accused wanted by the police.
High drama at court premises
The district court premises witnessed high drama for nearly an hour on Friday evening after Samarth Singh reportedly arrived to surrender.
He was seen wearing a face mask, sunglasses and a cap and remained silent when journalists attempted to question him.
According to eyewitnesses, some people accompanying him allegedly created a commotion when media persons tried approaching him.
Samarth Singh’s lawyer, Saurabh Sundar, later told reporters that his client had withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and had decided to surrender before the court.
However, he was taken into custody before the surrender process could be completed.
Samarth shifted to Bhopal police custody
Jabalpur police later handed Samarth Singh over to Bhopal police officials.
He was brought to Bhopal around 2 am and is currently being kept at Katara Hills police station. Officials are expected to produce him before a Bhopal court after 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh government has approached the court seeking rejection of the anticipatory bail plea filed by Giribala Singh.
In another major development, the Bar Council of India has suspended Samarth Singh’s licence. During the suspension period, he will not be allowed to use the prefix “Advocate” before his name.
