A wedding in Punjab’s Faridkot district was called off after the groom’s family allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh and four tolas of gold from the bride’s family shortly before the ceremony. When the bride’s family said it could not meet the demand, the groom refused to bring the wedding procession.
The wedding was scheduled for November 4. The bride’s family had completed the preparations, distributed invitation cards and welcomed relatives for the ceremony. However, the groom’s side backed out at the last moment, according to a report by NDTV.
The bride’s father subsequently approached the police and filed a complaint against the groom and his family.
The marriage had been arranged with Amanjot Singh, son of Shamsher Singh, who serves at Gurdwara
Narayansar in Jatike Sangojla village of Kapurthala district. The groom’s family belongs to Wahke village in Ferozepur district.
The families had been introduced by Jagjit Singh and his wife Sukhjit Kaur, residents of Shakoor village in Ferozepur. The engagement ceremony was held on February 1 at Maharaja Dhaba in Pakka village, and November 4 was fixed as the wedding date.
Faridkot Police have registered a case against six people, including Amanjot Singh, his parents Shamsher Singh and Sukhjit Kaur, his sister Manjot Kaur, and two others identified as Jagseer Singh and Sukhjit Kaur, who helped arrange the marriage.
Investigating officer ASI Raj Singh said the case was registered after an inquiry into the complaint. Police teams are conducting raids at different locations to arrest the accused.
