How rich was Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala? Rich enough to wear 1,001 diamonds on his chest. Not in a vault. Not in a crown. As a breastplate.
Among the many legendary rulers of princely India, few embodied luxury quite like Bhupinder Singh. Ruling Patiala from 1900 to 1938, he built a reputation for doing everything on a grand scale.
Jewels. Luxury cars. Palaces. And displays of wealth that still sound unreal today. His love for diamonds was especially famous.
In 1928, he commissioned the iconic Patiala Necklace from Cartier. Featuring nearly 3,000 diamonds and centred around the gigantic 234.65-carat De Beers diamond, it remains one of the most spectacular pieces of jewellery ever created. But even that wasn’t his most extraordinary possession.
That title arguably belonged to a diamond breastplate set with 1,001 blue-white diamonds. Yes, 1,001. Historical accounts describe it as one of the most dazzling symbols of royal wealth in princely India.
Every inch of its surface glittered with carefully matched diamonds, turning it into less a piece of jewellery and more a statement of power. And then there were the stories.
According to accounts from the era, the Maharaja would occasionally appear before his subjects wearing little more than the diamond-studded breastplate. The goal wasn’t fashion. It was spectacle. A way of projecting power, prosperity and royal authority without saying a word.
Whether every detail of these stories is true remains a subject of debate among historians. But the breastplate itself has been widely documented in accounts of Bhupinder Singh’s life and legendary treasury. And it perfectly reflected the man who owned it.
Bhupinder Singh collected luxury automobiles, commissioned Europe’s finest jewellers and cultivated a lifestyle that became the stuff of legend. His court was one of the most glamorous in the British Raj.
Today, the breastplate survives largely through historical records and royal lore. Yet it remains one of the most astonishing examples of princely excess ever recorded.
After all, in an era filled with fabulously wealthy Maharajas, it takes something extraordinary to stand out. A breastplate studded with 1,001 diamonds certainly did.
