High drama unfolded at the residence of Telangana Forest and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha in Hyderabad late on Wednesday when police arrived to take custody of the minister’s Officer on Special Duty
(OSD) N Sumanth, who was recently terminated over allegations of irregularities and extortion.
A Task Force team reached the minister’s residence based on information that Sumanth, accused of threatening officials of a private company for money, was present there. The police reportedly attempted to enter the premises to arrest him, news agency PTI reported.
However, Surekha’s daughter, Konda Sushmitha, “confronted and questioned” the police move to take Sumanth into custody. She objected to police in plainclothes at their home and demanded them produce the warrant.
Amid the tense exchange, Minister Surekha and Sumanth left the house together in a car, avoiding police.
Later speaking to reporters, Sushmitha alleged that her family was being targeted by “Reddy leaders” as they were from a Backward Class community.
“We came to know on Wednesday that Sumanth was removed as an OSD. Allegations were levelled against him of threatening an employee of a cement company with a weapon to extort money. It is a conspiracy to get a statement from Sumanth that he threatened the employee on the instance of my father Konda Murali and to implicate my father,” she said as quoted by the news agency.
She alleged that her mother was being targeted, adding, “On one side, there is a claim that members of the BC community are being given preference, and on the other side, some members of the Reddy community are targeting the Backward Caste community.”

Further alleging a conspiracy, Sushmita urged authorities to obtain the call records of Revanth Reddy, Rohin Reddy, OSD Sumanth, and the Deccan Cements management, who had accused the officer of extortion, claiming that “everything will become clear.”
What’s The Case?
The Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government recently terminated the services of Sumanth, who was initially appointed as an OSD in the Telangana Pollution Control Board over allegations of misconduct and corruption. He was subsequently deputed to the office of the forest minister.
Several reports emerged that Sumanth had threatened several cement factory owners in the Nalgonda, demanding money and warning of punitive action through the PCB if his demands were not met.
The government is said to have acted after receiving multiple complaints about his “arbitrary conduct”.
