Panaji, Apr 30 (PTI) The Goa forest department on Thursday declared 6.27 crore square metres of land along the Mandovi and Zuari rivers as ‘ecologically sensitive’.
Once an area is declared as ecologically sensitive, the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department can not allow construction or commercial development there, said a forest department official.
In a letter to the TCP department, the forest department said as per Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane’s directive of April 27, it has undertaken the exercise of identification and delineation of ecologically vulnerable areas along with banks of the two major rivers.
“The total area identified (as ecologically sensitive) along both the riverbanks is 6729.54 hectares which is approximately 6.27 crore
square metres,” the letter said, asking the TCP department to take necessary action as per the Town and Country Planning Act. PTI RPS KRK
