Left-handed batter Devon Conway opened the innings for New Zealand in the first innings of the ongoing third Test against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham and scored 157 runs from 224 balls. He smashed 22 fours and three sixes during his stay at the crease on Thursday (June 25) and shared a 317-run opening partnership with captain Tom Latham, who made 151 runs from 214 deliveries. Conway’s innings of 157 helped him enter the record books.
The 34-year-old South Africa-born batter has become only the second New Zealand cricketer in 95 years, and the first since 1973, to score 150 or more runs in multiple Test matches in England.

Before his knock of 157 in Nottingham
on Thursday, Conway had scored 200 runs on his Test debut at Lord’s in June 2021.
The only other New Zealand batter to register multiple scores of 150 or more in Test matches played in England is former captain Bevan Congdon. Congdon scored 176 runs in the Nottingham Test played from June 7 to 12, 1973, and followed it up with an innings of 175 in the Lord’s Test played from June 21 to 26, 1973.
New Zealand played their first-ever Test series in England in 1931, and in the last 95 years, Congdon and Conway are the only two Kiwi batters to have scored 150 or more runs in multiple Test innings on English soil.
Conway-Latham break partnership record
On Day 1 of the third Test against England New Zealand skipper Latham and Conway dominated proceedings and put together a 317-run stand for the first wicket.
Their 317-run partnership helped them enter the record books by surpassing the highest partnership for any wicket by New Zealand against England in a Test match.
The previous record was held by Stewie Dempster and Jackie Mills, who added 276 runs for the first wicket in the first innings of the Wellington Test played from June 24 to 27, 1930.
The record for New Zealand’s highest partnership in a Test match is held by Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe. Jones scored 186, while Crowe made 299, as they shared a 467-run stand for the third wicket in New Zealand’s second innings of the January-February 1991 Test against Sri Lanka in Wellington.
