Malayalam filmmaker Jeethu Joseph, the creator of the cult-hit Drishyam franchise, has opened up about what fans can expect from the highly anticipated Drishyam 3. Starring Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan,
and Esther Anil, the film continues to generate massive excitement as audiences await the next chapter in Georgekutty’s gripping saga.
The original Drishyam (2013) became a cultural phenomenon across India and beyond, spawning remakes in six languages including Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Sinhala, and Mandarin. Its sequel, Drishyam 2 (2021), earned equal acclaim and inspired second installments in several of its remake versions. Now, Jeethu Joseph is returning with Part 3—this time with the promise that the story will evolve naturally, without the pressure of topping previous films.
Drishyam 3 Will Follow an Organic, Character-Driven Path
Speaking exclusively to SCREEN, Jeethu Joseph emphasized that his approach to Drishyam 3 is rooted strictly in the internal logic of the characters.
“I’ve created only one franchise so far, that’s Drishyam. Nonetheless, it’s an organic approach that I have used there,” he said. “That was the case with Part 2, and it will be the same with Drishyam 3.”
Jeethu addressed audience expectations head-on, after many fans expressed hopes that the new film would surpass the brilliance of Drishyam 2.
“People told me, ‘Drishyam 2’s script was amazing, and we expect something better than that.’ But I’m not consciously trying to write a ‘better-than-Drishyam 2’ script just for the sake of it. My focus is only on Georgekutty and his family, and on what could have happened in their lives over the six or seven years since Part 2.”
Characters Have Grown—and Their World Has Changed
Jeethu revealed that while Georgekutty retains certain defining qualities, other elements of his personality and circumstances will reflect the passage of time.
He explained that Rani (Meena), Anju (Ansiba Hassan), and Anu (Esther Anil) have also undergone meaningful evolution. The filmmaker noted how Anu, who was a child when the pivotal incident occurred, has now matured into a young adult—a change the film will acknowledge with emotional nuance.
The world around the family has shifted too, Jeethu added.
“In the first part, the people around him believed Georgekutty was innocent. In Part 2, however, many of them thought otherwise. Their view changed. I have employed a similar organic approach in Part 3 as well.”
No Formula, No Forced Twists—Just Realistic Progression
Jeethu Joseph stressed that Drishyam 3 is not an attempt to recreate or outdo the success of the previous installments, but instead to build a story that grows naturally from the consequences of Georgekutty’s choices.
“It was never like, ‘Since Part 2 became a hit, I’ll do so and so to make Part 3 a hit.’ Everything comes from what could have realistically happened in their lives.”
The filmmaker concluded that the audience will understand this approach when they see the film—and just as Drishyam 2 differed from the first, Drishyam 3 will offer yet another unique narrative journey.
