Long before she became part of the Bachchan family, Aishwarya Rai went through a frightening on-set accident that left some of Bollywood’s biggest stars deeply shaken. The incident happened in 2003 during the shooting of Khakee near Nashik, and years later, Amitabh Bachchan spoke with rare emotion about how serious the situation truly was. A Routine Shoot That Turned Dangerous The accident took place while a high-risk scene was being filmed with Akshay Kumar, Aishwarya and Tusshar Kapoor. A stuntman lost control of a speeding vehicle, which skidded and rammed straight into Aishwarya’s chair. With no time to react, both Aishwarya and Tusshar were caught off guard. Akshay Kumar immediately rushed in and helped pull the car away, allowing the injured
actress to be taken out and rushed to hospital. The moment sent shockwaves through the set and left the entire cast and crew shaken. Amitabh Bachchan’s Anger Over ‘Trivial’ Reporting What upset Amitabh Bachchan the most was how lightly the incident was reported at the time. In an interview with Rediff, he criticised the media for calling the injuries minor, when the reality was far more serious. “I asked Aishwarya’s mother if she wanted to take her daughter back to Mumbai. We organised Anil Ambani’s private plane. Since there is no night landing facility in Nashik, we had to take permission from Delhi to land the plane at the military base which is 45 minutes away from the hospital. The seats had to be removed from the aircraft. And everyone is brushing it off as a small incident blown out of proportion,” Amitabh said. Injuries That Left a Lasting Impact The actor also shared how deeply the accident affected him personally. “For two nights I couldn’t sleep. To see this happen in front of my eyes! Her back was lacerated with cactus thorns. The bone in the rear portion of her feet is broken. She suffered severe cuts. And her injury was reported as trivial,” he added. At the time, Aishwarya was not related to the Bachchan family, making Amitabh’s concern stand out even more. Aishwarya later married Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007, becoming Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The couple have a daughter, Aaradhya Bachchan.
