Actor-turned-politician Vijay will conduct indoor meetings with smaller audiences in each district in Tamil Nadu starting November 23. The first stop for the meeting is Jeppiar Tech Institute in Kanchipuram
district where the meeting will be held at 11am.
“We plan to have indoor meetings with over 2,000 people in each district. With SOPs in court, Vijay is keen to kickstart campaigns with a safe format for now,” a top TVK source had told News18 before the party took to X to announce its plans.
The Tamil Nadu government had submitted draft SOPs for political rallies before the Madras High Court after the Karur stampede during Vijay’s rally claimed 41 lives. The government informed the court that organisers and political parties that violate conditions imposed by the police will be penalised.
The draft SOP submitted before the court puts onus on the organiser for crowd management. It states that one needs “a written undertaking from the organiser that the organiser is fully responsible for crowd safety, regulation and management. Organiser liable for damage to public and private property and can compensate for losses”.
Earlier this week, TVK had submitted a petition at the office of the Salem city police commissioner seeking permission to conduct a campaign on December 4. The police, however, turned down the request, citing that it falls on the eve of Karthigai Deepam festival, and asked Vijay’s party to suggest dates post-December 6.
The TVK is now all set to resume rallies from the second week of December after halting them in the aftermath of the Karur tragedy.
